Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility Criteria for UGC-NET December 2024.
1. Educational Qualifications

Minimum Marks Required
General/Unreserved/General-EWS
At least 55% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s degree or equivalent examination in relevant subjects from universities recognized by UGC.
OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/Third Gender
At least 50% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s degree or equivalent examination.
Ph.D. Degree Holders (Completed by 19 Sep 1991)
Relaxation of 5% marks for those with a Ph.D. degree, i.e., 50% marks instead of 55%.
Subjects Eligible: Candidates must apply in a subject related to their Master’s degree. If the subject is not available in the list of NET subjects, they may choose a related subject.
2. Candidates Pursuing Master’s Degree

Details
Candidates in Final Year of Master’s
Candidates who are in their final year of Master’s degree or whose result is awaited may apply, but will be admitted provisionally. They must pass the Master’s degree with the required percentage to be considered eligible for JRF/Assistant Professor.
Completion Requirement
Candidates must complete their Master’s degree within 2 years from the date of NET result (1 year for Ph.D. admission only) to retain eligibility.
3. Relaxation for Third Gender Candidates
Relaxations Available: Candidates from the Third gender category will get the same relaxations in fee, age, and eligibility criteria (JRF/Assistant Professor) as SC/ST/PwD candidates.
Subject-wise Cut-offs: The qualifying cut-off for third gender candidates will be the lowest among those for SC/ST/PwD/OBC-NCL/General-EWS in each subject.
4. Eligibility for Ph.D. Holders (Ph.D. Degree by 19 Sep 1991)
Relaxation in Marks: Candidates with a Ph.D. degree whose Master’s examination was completed by 19 September 1991 will be eligible for a 5% relaxation in marks (from 55% to 50%).
5. Candidates with 4-Year Bachelor’s Degree

Minimum Marks Required
Candidates must have secured at least 75% marks in a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree program (or equivalent grade).
Relaxation for Reserved Categories
A relaxation of 5% marks is available for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/PwD/EWS candidates.
Eligibility for JRF/Ph.D.
Candidates qualifying NET based on a 4-year Bachelor’s degree are eligible for JRF and admission to Ph.D. but not eligible for Assistant Professor.
Candidates in Final Year of Bachelor’s Program
Candidates in their final semester of a 4-year Bachelor’s degree program can apply provisionally, but must meet the eligibility criteria within 2 years of NET result for JRF or 1 year for Ph.D. admission only.
6. Additional Important Points
Provisional Admission: Candidates who are in their final semester/year of their Master’s degree or 4-year undergraduate program must meet all the eligibility criteria within the given time frames after the NET result to remain eligible for JRF/Ph.D. or Assistant Professor positions.
Related Subjects: If your Master’s subject is not available in the list of NET subjects, you can apply for a related subject, provided it aligns with the qualifications listed in the UGC guidelines.
